These events just keep getting better and better!

Artistic Expression in Second Life

Second Life is a virtual world that allows its Residents to create completely original content using atomistic building tools in a shared and globally accessible space. In this respect it is a very unique new medium for artistic expression, as it give artists not only a new collection of creative tools but also the ability to create an environment where individuals can experience this art as a group while engaging with each other. How are artists exploring this new medium of virtual worlds, and what can we all learn from them?

Virtual Worlds - Best Practices in Education - March 27-29 '09

I have attended the 2007 and 2008 conferences. I highly recommend it for educators and post-secondary students - this will give you a good perspective on how things could look in the near future.  Anyone interested in using SL in education should make and take the time to attend at least some of the sessions at this conference.  It is completely free of charge and takes place entirely within SL - meaning that there are presenters and attendees from all over the planet.

IBM Virtual Culture Festival - Native American sim

IBM has put a lot of work into setting this up - The IBM Virtual Culture Festival. The IBM Native Diversity Network (INDN) and the IBM Virtual Universe Community (VUC) cooperated to provide information about different indigenous cultures. Some sims are in Second Life while others or on their own servers behind the IBM firewalls, so, you may not be able to get to all of the content you see in the video.

PIVOTE - a Virtual Learning Authoring System for Virtual Worlds

PIVOTE (which came out of the UK JISC PREVIEW project and involved Coventry University, St George's Hospital University of London, Kingston University and Daden Limited) officially goes into open source today. With PIVOTE you can author a learning exercise using a forms based application on the web, and then play it in Second Life, or on the web, or even on a mobile.

PIVOTE offers 5 key features:

Are you ready to teach in Second Life?

Here is a simple quiz you can take to evaluate how comfortable you are in Second Life. This is just a first draft according to the author, but should give you a good estimation of where you fit on a spectrum.

If you feel you are ready, then take the quiz -> click here .

University class in Second Life - NPR Interview with professor

An interesting NPR (National Public Radio) interview from March 7th, 2009 with a New Mexico State University professor who holds a class once a week inside SecondLife. Click here to listen to the audio. One of his students is also there to answer questions.

Education Uses of SecondLife in Wikispaces

This is an overview of some of ways Second Life can be used, and in some cases, has been used for educational purposes.

4 pages of links and information along with a good slideshow of inworld snapshots. An excellent resource about what can be done in SL.
